Bohanan’s Fine Steak and Seafood San Antonio, TX
The Story: Bohanan’s is known for its high-end food and craft cocktails, but it is even more well known for the change that it had on the city of San Antonio. Sasha Petraske, famous bartender and Co-founder of San Antonio’s distilling conference, created Bohanan’s cocktail menu. Every craft cocktail bar owner in San Antonio got their start at Bohanan’s. Most got their start training directly with Sasha. The current bartenders who knew him still speak fondly of Sasha. Generally, the impression I got was he always loved a good time. It absolutely amazes me that his dream changed the bar culture of San Antonio.
Experience: It is clear to me why Bohanan’s had such a large influence on the city. In fact, they won my heart over as well.
I walked in by chance, and once I saw the whiskey selection, was immediately happy with my decision. I loved everything about the place, from the quotes on the menu to the classic cocktails. I had a hot toddy, which was an absolutely perfect to get the chill out of my bones on a cold day. Once I saw the old fashion made right way, I could not help but try it as well. Both cocktails exceeded my expectations as I loved them both. I then moved on to my favorite cocktail, straight whiskey. The large selection of whiskies made it hard to decide on an option. I asked the bartender for a recommendation between two bourbons and a scotch; she responded with recommendations and flavor profiles for each. I was floored and excited. I ended up getting a delicious Laphroig Lore. I was having such a great time, that I decided to venture upstairs to the dining room bar for a delicious, perfectly cooked filet Oscar style. During my meal, I had a fantastic conversation with the bartender about Texas whiskies and different favorites we both share. He was extremely knowledgeable about local distilleries as well as other rare whiskies. Overall it was a wonderful dining experience.
Recommendation: This is a whiskey lover’s dream with a wonderful rotating selection and extremely reasonably priced pours for higher end whiskies. They had some of the best prices for Pappy selections that I have seen. Bohanan’s high class setting and wonderful cocktails makes it ideal for happy hour or a business meeting. The location is perfect for a special occasion dinner, but it is a bit expensive for the everyday dinner. However, the food is bound to impress for a anniversary or birthday dinner. I love my experience and did not meet another person in town with a single bad thing to say about Bohanan’s. Enjoy your next trip to San Antonio! I’m off to yoga. Cheers!
